Areas and Town Information for Cape Verde
Boavista
Boavista is nearly 3 times larger than its neighbour, Sal, yet much quieter and is the most Eastern of the islands, closest to the African coastline.
Crystal clear waters provide excellent conditions for all types of water sports. The island has 55 km of beautiful white sand beaches of which it is known for most. Boavista is only a 12 minute aerotaxi from Sal, which has an international airport.
Maio
Less than 15 minutes flight from Santiago, Maio is a quiet island, similar in size to Sal, however far less developed. It has the largest forest park in Cape Verde , and almost its entire coastline is made up of deserted beaches of golden sand. Maio's capital is a small town called Vila Do Maio, which is dominated by its large white Baroque church.
Sal
Boasts long white sandy beaches, the longest, Santa Maria is 8km in length. The international airport has encouraged tourism at a faster pace than the other islands and already has an abundance of bars, restaurants, shops and markets.
Sal currently attracts the largest number of tourists who come mainly for the watersports, scuba diving in particular is popular given the vast species of sea life in the area. Among the islands' most colourful fauna are its coral and fish, especially in the waters around Sal, where you'll see parrot fish, barracuda and moray eels. You might also spot blue and humpback whales, dolphins, harbour porpoise and turtles.
A must when visiting the island is the salt lagoon at the Pedro Lume salt mines, where the salinity comes close to that of the Dead Sea.
Santiago
The largest of the Cape Verde Islands. Santiago has two mountain ranges, the interior is covered with lush banana, mango and papaya plantations, while the coastline is dotted with numerous small sandy coves. An international airport has recently been completed at its capital Praia. |
